Why Asbestos Evaluation Is Still Required

Even though asbestos use has declined, asbestos-containing materials remain legal in many forms and may still be present in buildings of various ages. Because asbestos is a known carcinogen, federal regulations require that building materials be evaluated for asbestos before they are disturbed during renovation or demolition activities.

This requirement applies regardless of the building's age, unless materials are verified to be asbestos-free through documentation or testing.

OSHA Standard (29 CFR 1926.1101(k)(1))

"Building and facility owners shall determine the presence, location, and quantity of asbestos-containing material at the worksite."

An asbestos evaluation may include inspection, sampling/testing, or documentation verifying materials do not contain asbestos.
